Notes: Processability Theory (Pienemann 1998) is based on psycholonguistic mechanisms which are modelled using the unification of lexical features in second language acquisition. This paper extends the architecture of Processability Theory by adding a second set of mechanisms which are modelled using lexical mapping theory. This extension yields the inclusion of a range of additional phenomena in the processabilty hiererchy thus widening the scope of processabilty theory. This volume examines the typological plausibility of Processability Theory, a psycholinguistic approach to second language acquisition developed by Pienemann (1998). A typological perspective is applied to Arabic, Chinese and Japanese as well as to the issue of L1 transfer and to the comparison of different types of acquisition. The original theory is extended to include a wider range of phenomena. All Chapters are based on large sets of second language corpora. (Four of the eight chapters of the book are authored or co-authored by Pienemann.)
