I am a Speech and Language Therapist at heart and my research and teaching reflects a desire to make a difference in everyday life. I am a specialist in acquired neurological communication disorders and dysphagia. My main interest is adult aphasia, particularly the language used by people with acquired apraxia of speech (AOS).
Earlier in my career I adapted the Aphasia Screening Test into Panjabi, and I am still interested in bilingual aphasia. I hold a masters level qualification in dysphagia.
I am currently working as SLT expert practitioner and project lead for a 2 year project funded by North Tyneside Council, called CHANT (Communication Hub for Aphasia in North Tyneside). My NHS employer is North Tyneside PCT.
I am writing papers from my PhD which was awarded from the University of Manchester in November 2008 for 'An investigation of Apraxia of Speech and grammar in connected speech following stroke'.
I was also awarded some research money from the North of Tyne Research Collaboration to carry out a research evaluation of the CHANT project. This will shed light on long term support for people with aphasia following stroke, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. I am being supported in this work by Dr Anne Whitworth.
I continue to enjoy working as a clinical educator for some sessions in the North East Aphasia Centre at the university.
I am an advisor in Apraxia of Speech to RCSLT
