Advanced assessment of children with speech language and communication needs (SLCN) - SPE8310
Professionals: SLTs, Specialist Teachers
Module Leader: Dr Helen Stringer
Dates: 19th, 20th, 21st March
Summary
Detailed and accurate assessment of a child’s speech, language and communication behaviour is the foundation of every successful management plan. This module will build on the students’ experience and knowledge to explore the theory behind different methods of assessment. Students will develop expertise in using a range of different techniques to assess SLCN more effectively and objectively, using the data to inform differential diagnosis, management planning and the measurement of the effectiveness of intervention.
Outline of Syllabus
- How do we know what and when to assess and how do we do it? The application of assessment frameworks e.g. ICF; developmental theories underpinning assessment; hypothesis formation and testing.
- Observational assessment and developmental norms
- Dynamic assessment and Vygotskian theory in SLCN and learning
- Standardised assessments, measuring diagnostic accuracy and critical appraisal
- Measuring the effectiveness of intervention, control measures and analysis
- Using assessment data to the benefit of the child; differential diagnosis; management planning
Intended Knowledge Outcomes
This module will enable students
- To develop their understanding of the theory underlying methods of assessment
- To understand the purpose and process of assessment of SLCN in children
- To understand the statistical basis of the diagnostic accuracy of standardised assessments
- To understand the rationale and methodology for measuring intervention effectiveness
Intended Skill Outcomes
This module will enable students
- To critically appraise and evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of standardised assessments
- To utilise a full range of assessment techniques at an advanced level e.g. observational, standardised, probe, dynamic assessment
- To develop effective targeted assessments based on developmental theory and developmental norms
- To devise control measures to enable the measurement of effectiveness of intervention
Teaching Rationale and Relationships
Lectures will convey the theoretical basis and models of assessment; statistical methods and techniques. Seminars will give students the opportunity to discuss theoretical and practical aspects of assessment, applying their previous experience and knowledge. Practical and group learning will provide students with the opportunity to develop and apply new knowledge and skills. Fieldwork will require students to apply new knowledge and skills in their clinical practice.
