Research
The School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at Newcastle University
aims to provide a research environment in which ambitious new and
original ideas can flourish and in which every individual member of staff can
be research active.
The School was awarded a 5A for research in the RAE 2001. Research has increased dramatically since the RAE 2001 and we have exceeded our targets for the RAE 2008. In The Sunday Times University Guide on Research Quality EECE is ranked amongst the top 5 schools in the UK.
The School runs an Annual Research Conference which provides a showcase for our research students and young research staff.
Our research work is centred on four major research groups of international standing:
- Communications, Sensors and Signal Processing - including theoretical and applied signal processing research for digital communications, underwater acoustic communications, image processing, speech processing, and biomedical applications.
- Emerging Technologies and Materials (formerly Nano Materials and Electronics) - including ferroelectrics, graphene, silicon carbide, diamond and functional nanostructures for sensors, electronics and photovoltaics, and underpinning multi-scale modelling.
- Microelectronics System Design - including asynchronous systems design, visualisation, synthesis and test. Metastability characterisation and time measurement.
- Power Electronics, Drives and Machines - including motor design, novel electromagnetic devices, power semiconductor devices and circuits, and advanced control strategies research.
Within each group, there is a core of academic staff supervising research staff and postgraduate students.
