Dr. Zahawi was born and grew up in Baghdad, Iraq. He received his BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Newcastle, UK, in 1983 and his PhD from the same University in 1988.
From 1988 to 1993, he worked as an Electrical Engineer for Cortina Electric Company Ltd, a UK manufacturer of large variable speed drives and other power conversion equipment based in Watford near London. In 1994, he joined the lecturing staff of the Department of Electrical Engineering at The University of Manchester.
Dr. Zahawi joined the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at Newcastle University as a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering in September 2003.
