Microelectronics System Design Group

[ Signals and Systems ] The Group is built on Newcastle's traditional strengths in microelectronics design, with the aim of using their synergy to tackle the challenges of rapidly evolving pervasive and mobile information technologies. Expertise in the Group spans circuits, architectures, algorithms, and systems, and involves seven academic staff and four RAs, creating a critical mass to cover both fundamental and applied research in complex electronics systems engineering. The Group is supported by outstanding research facilities, including high frequency equipment worth over £500k funded by SRIF2. While developing original design flows and in-house software tools, the Group has become one of the most prolific design teams using Europractice software (Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor Graphics and Handshake Solutions) and exploiting links with multinationals such as Intel, Atmel and Sun for chip fabrication. All this allows the Group to perform feasibility studies, prototyping, testing and characterisation of advanced ICs in 65nm (and beyond) CMOS processes and beyond, complex electronics and systems to the highest industrial standards, and be competitive with world-leading groups.

The Group is seeking to establish a multidisciplinary research centre in pervasive electronics systems engineering to complement and support Newcastle's strategic directions in Ageing and Health and Molecular Engineering. The role is to provide core assistive electronic technologies through active representation in the Informatics and Nanotechnology Research Institutes at Newcastle.

  • Asynchronous Systems Design, including Visualisation, Synthesis and Test
  • Metastability Characterisation and Time Measurement
  • On-Chip Synchronisation, Arbitration and Networks
  • Secure IC design
