This project, wholly funded by Black and Decker, centres around the research of high torque machines for low cost applications. If successful, the machines developed will be able to replace high speed machines and gearboxes with a single, smaller component. By designing the machine in close association with the final application, it has been possible to produce an ergonomically superior product. In this project new machine topologies are being developed, and new magnetic materials exploited to result in the very high torque density desired. Development of the product is also taking cost implications into account.
