Tyneside Cinema Book Club

Tyneside Book Club logo

The Tyneside Cinema Book Club is open to anyone. At each session, a screening of a literary adaptation is introduced by a guest presenter, who also leads an informal discussion after the film. Classic revivals are mixed with new releases, and we don't mind if you haven't read the book.

Book Club is organised by Andrew Shail at the University, and Holli McGuire at the Tyneside Cinema.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby (rated 12a) - Sunday 19th May, 12.45pm

Adapted from F Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel by Baz Luhrmann and long-standing collaborator Craig Pearce (Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge), and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, The Great Gatsby mixes, in typical Luhrmann fashion, visual lusciousness and emotional intensity. This meeting of Book Club will be led by Katherine Farrimond, a specialist in gender and sexuality in contemporary popular cinema at Newcastle University.
