Language and Linguistics

The School is home to a large group of experts in English language and the wider area of linguistics.

In our teaching and research we address a range of topics to do with the structure and use of language, including:

  • syntax and semantics
  • phonology
  • sociolinguistics and discourse analysis
  • first and second language acquisition
  • historical linguistics
  • language evolution

We pay special attention to similarities and differences across languages.

We offer a range of undergraduate degrees and postgraduate courses in language and linguistics. These are offered both within the School and jointly with the School of Modern Languages.

Together with language and linguistics experts in other schools at the University, we form the Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS). The Centre is one of the largest concentrations of expertise in this field within the UK.
