School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics Masters Bursary Awards 2015-16

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics seeks outstanding applicants for School Bursaries on our Master's programmes in Literature, Film, Linguistics and Creative Writing. We are offering six bursaries worth £12000 each (full fees and maintenance) and all bursary holders will also be mentored towards developing doctoral applications.

Bursaries will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who, at the time the application is submitted, have accepted an offer of a place for 2015-16 entry on one of the following Master's programmes in the School:

  • MLitt (Masters by Research) in Literature, Film, or Linguistics
  • MA in English Literature: 1500-1900
  • MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature
  • MA in Creative Writing
  • MA in Linguistics

You need to have an achieved or predicted first-class undergraduate degree or a lower qualification with relevant professional practice that provides equivalent academic and research skills. You also need to demonstrate clear plans for how your Master's programme will lead to an original and exciting PhD project.

Successful applicants will join our thriving School which was ranked third in the UK for English Language and Literature in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. We have an energetic, creative and well-resourced postgraduate culture that includes the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts and the Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS). Award holders will benefit from expert teaching and have the opportunity to work with the library's Special Collections, the wide range of linguistic corpora available in CRiLLS, and our partner organisations, including Northern Stage, Wordsworth Trust, and Seven Stories: the National Centre for Children's Books.

Applicants from Newcastle University can hold Bursaries in conjunction with Excellence Scholarships but Bursary award holders are not eligible for the Alumni Discount. All shortlisted applicants will be expected to attend for interview in mid July 2015 and results of the competition will be announced by the end of July 2015.
