What is it?
The Erasmus programme provides students with the opportunity to spend a semester studying abroad.
Why do it?
The Erasmus programme is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience living in another country. You are exposed to a different way of life and the experience of a different culture. Your participation demonstrates resilience, adaptability and confidence – all skills that employers favour. More importantly it’s an opportunity to broaden your horizons and experience new challenges.
Who can go and when?
The programme is open to all students studying for degrees in the School of English Literature, Language & Linguistics.
Students study abroad for one semester. This can be taken in semester two of Stage 2 only.
Where can you go?
The School of English Literature, Language & Linguistics has Erasmus links with the following universities – Leiden in the Netherlands, Peter Pazmany near Budapest in Hungary, Gdansk in Poland and Ghent in Belguim.
We also have study abroad links with two universities in Canada – Dalhousie and New Brunswick. (different funding arrangements apply to European & non-European universities, see Dr Meiko O'Halloran for further details).
Practicalities
These universities offer a wide range of courses in the Arts & Humanities that are taught in English so you do not need to speak a second language. However, funds are available for you to take language classes if you wish.
The modules that are offered abroad are comparable to those you study in our School. The work that you do and the grades you achieve abroad are counted towards your final degree. A system called ‘European Credit Transfer System’ (ECTS) is used to ‘translate’ your marks on your return.
Finances
You pay your annual UK tuition fee to Newcastle University but do not pay any additional fees to the university you wish to visit. You are eligible for a small (non-means tested) Erasmus grant that goes towards the additional costs of study abroad. Funding is also available for language classes.
How to apply
If you are interested speak to Dr Meiko O'Halloran, the Erasmus co-ordinator for the school. She will provide you with further details and appropriate paperwork. There are application forms to complete but they are not too time-consuming.
Deadlines
If you are interested in studying abroad in semester two of stage 2, the deadline for paperwork is October. If you are interested in studying abroad for semester one of stage 3 the deadline of February.
