Design Features
The purpose of the Devonshire Building was to bring together researchers from a number of different disciplines and to facilitate and encourage cross-disciplinary working and collaboration. Many of the design features of the building are built around this concept and are intended to directly promote interdisciplinarity:
- open-plan layout to encourage colleagues from different Schools to engage in open discussion about their work;
- the atrium and upper level break-out areas to allow people to have informal discussions and to interact socially across disciplines;
- glass lift and balustrades and ‘flying’ staircase increase awareness of who is in the building, facilitating open discussion and interaction.
