Sustainable Development has its roots in the Brundtland Commission Report (1987) in which it was defined as development that ‘meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. It has remained high on the political agenda since the 1992 Earth Summit. Addressing the capacity of all stakeholders through education is crucial to the promotion of Sustainable Development.
The goal of the EfSD Programme is to help in the creation of a global learning space for EfSD by the end of 2015. The programme is intended to work on research and capacity development to integrate components into curricula at all levels of education and in all sectors of society.
