Regional Centre for Expertise (RCE)

Moorbank Botanical GardenEducation for Sustainable Development (EfSD) encompasses a new vision of education that seeks to empower people of all ages to assume responsibility for creating and enjoying a sustainable future.

The outreach teams of the Swan Centre have been examining ways of promoting and implementing the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), the initiative adopted by the United Nations General Assembly with UNESCO designated as the lead agency for its promotion.

The United Nations University (Institute of Advanced Studies) has proposed a worldwide system of Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) to deliver EfSD to regional communities, each of which comprises a local network of existing formal, non-formal and informal educational organisations and establishments.

In order to provide the foundation for a network to engage as a RCE the team has been creating links with groups who are making positive contributions to EfSD, and is actively engaging with these existing structures and partnerships across the region.
