Moorbank Garden, the University Botanic garden, is situated within walking distance of Newcastle City Centre on the edge of the Town Moor.
The EfSD team are working with a number of local schools to develop the unique tropical and desert plant collections at Moorbank for educational outreach, and citizen engagement, in issues relating to sustainable development and climate change. The goal is to establish Moorbank as an extra-mural arm for schools across the region, delivering educational programmes that will complement the science curriculum across all stages of education.
We aim to link educational programmes to ongoing research within the University that is related to topical issues of environmental and biological relevance (for example, photosynthesis and carbon trading, medicinal plants and biodiversity conservation, plant responses to pollution and climate change).
The legacy arising from the establishment of such programs at Moorbank will be the inspiration of a new generation of environmentalists, an aspiration which lies at the very heart of the present UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
