From a dedicated facility, The Centre for Renewable Energy from Land (CREEL) will promote research into existing and emerging bioenergy technologies, helping to translate them into viable applications for businesses, communities and the public sector. CREEL will bring together on one rural, but accessible site, elements of existing research and development work from within the University so that established and developing technologies for the generation, transmission and use of energy from land can be promoted through education and demonstration. Alongside the research, development and teaching functions, the facility will incorporate incubator space that will be let to spin out companies or to existing businesses that are involved in “green” energy technology.
CREEL will feature multiple collaborations between a range of academic experts and partners throughout the global bioenergy industry. Through collaboration, educational and promotional activities CREEL aims to increase understanding of bioenergy technologies. This will increase the amount of bioenergy produced in the North East and beyond to maximise the environmental and economic benefits of these technologies.
