Swan Centre researchers are looking at ways to improve the efficiency of wind-generated electricity and we specialise in the areas below:

  • offshore wind,  offshore power engineering,  expertise in high-power AC/DC conversion, HV DC transmission and large-scale power electronics;
  • large electrical machines – virtually unique in UK academia now;
  • doubly-fed induction generators for wind turbines; improving control and fault ride-through;
  • very large direct-drive permanent magnet generators for next-generation offshore windfarms .
