Clean Use of Fossil Fuels

Clean use of fossil fuels

Researchers at Newcastle University are working on:

  • Methane from accelerated degradation of heavy oil in situ. Drawing upon petroleum geology, petroleum engineering, microbiology, microbial ecology and mathematical modelling expertise. Innoculants for accelerating microbial conversion.
  • Methane from accelerated microbial degradation of coal to gas in situ.
  • Hydrogen from accelerated degradation of heavy oil and from tar sands.
  • Equipment: lab-scale methanogenesis.
  • Characterising heavy oil deposits to assess methanogenetic potential.
  • Potential to link to CCS.
  • Geology of oil fields; oil chemistry; analytical geochemistry.
