Hydrogeochemical Engineering Research and Outreach (HERO)

The Hydrogeochemical Engineering Research and Outreach (HERO) group draws together researchers from a variety of social, political and scientific backgrounds with a common interest in assessing and remedying the environmental impact of human activity, particularly in the field of energy production. In particular the group focus upon:

  • the issues surrounding mine water pollution assessment and treatment;
  • the application of other related environmental technologies;
  • the wider behaviour and management of inorganic pollutants in the environment.

An integral part of the team’s work is its outreach dimension, which has the objective of ensuring effective engagement with the public and industry during its research activities.

Over the ten years since its formation, HERO has established itself as one of the leading research groups in these areas, and has been successful in winning numerous high-profile research grants, and a number of distinguished awards including a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2005.
