Academics in the School’s New Rail Centre have successfully secured EU Horizon 2020 funding as part of the Shift2Rail scheme.
Dr Emmanuel Matsika and Professor Mark Robinson have been awarded £223k to undertake a project entitled FAIR Stations: Future Secure and Accessible Rail Stations. Principal Investigator Dr Matsika stated that the project ‘aims to develop solutions for improved accessibility and passenger flow within railway stations, and at the platform/ train interface.’
Meanwhile, Dr Marin Marinov and Professor Mark Robinson have been awarded £98.5k to undertake research on Optimisation of Yards and Network Management. Principal Investigator Dr Marinov stated that the project will investigate ‘operating processes with freight trains in both rail marshalling yards and small scale shunting yards to improve capacity and system reliability. Real-time interaction between yard and relevant network IT systems will also be studied to make it possible for real-time software-based planning and management of single wagonload and block-train services.’
