Freak waves and their impact on deepwater offshore structures

The project is aimed at providing an improved understanding of freak wave phenomenon: its occurrence and characteristics; and significantly technical contributions to the technology development of freak wave generation in laboratory environment. The proposed combined novel theoretical and experimental approach to investigate the complex freak wave interaction with deepwater offshore structures will lead to a further development of advanced design methodology and guidelines of offshore structures with significantly improved performance and safety. The results obtained from theoretical and numerical study, and experimental measurements will provide quality benchmark for future study.

More widely, the joint supervision of PhD students participated in this research project by academics from the two institutions will significantly strengthen our existing research collaboration, and further create critical mass of expertise with upcoming young researchers who are expected to lead the future research in this important area.
