Structural Performance of Aluminium Naval Vessels

The research investigated the use of aluminium for the construction of large naval ship hulls. The project provided much needed understanding and methodologies for the use of aluminium in large ship hull construction by investigating the material and strength related properties of aluminium. Structural analysis methodologies for progressive collapse at both the component level and the global level were compared with available experimental data and then referenced to similar steel structures for comparative purposes. A new methodology for predicting global hull girder collapse was developed as part of this research project.
