Novel barnacle-inspired adhesives for underwater applications.

This project is centred on the application of synthetic biology-driven approaches for the production by bacteria of bioadhesive proteins from barnacles. Extensive previous studies have identified two adhesives from barnacle larvae (one temporary, one permanent) that are amenable to further development.  Results relating to the composition and mechanism of action of these multi-component systems will ultimately inspire simplified commercial products and provide proxy materials for testing antifouling coatings.
