Welcome to the Institute for Research on Environment and Sustainability (IRES)

Established in 2004, IRES is Newcastle University’s hub for environmental research.

IRES is a ‘virtual’ institute in that it has no research staff of its own, but exists to promote dialogue and interaction between researchers, both across Newcastle University and from other institutions, particularly at the interface between disciplines and across discipline boundaries.

Our mission is to undertake interdisciplinary research to sustain the natural resource base and to improve the quality of life for people regionally, nationally and internationally.

Our research is interdisciplinary and addresses social, economic, environmental and technological issues.

Anyone with an interest in environmental or sustainability issues is encouraged to join IRES free of charge, either as an individual or on behalf of an organisation or department.

The first biennial IRES Jack Jeffery Environment and Sustainability Lecture, to be given by Jonathon Porritt, will be held on 27 October 2009. For more information please visit our Events section.
