About Switch Off 2010
Running a university requires a great deal of electricity. We have 18,000 students 5,500 staff and everyone has to be kept warm or cool and illuminated! Everyone also needs access to computers and a wide range of research equipment. All of this requires energy, and in 2008/09 the University spent £5.6M on electricity and another £3M on gas. The trouble is that we tend to waste a lot of energy on campus.

In fact, around half of our electricity is used outside of normal working hours when most people are not here!

Switch off 2010 is a Newcastle University campaign to reduce the amount of electrical items that are left on needlessly. It is a year long campaign to reduce waste energy use which will be delivered across the campus starting in January.
- See Aims.
Members of the ESS Sustainability Team will be visiting a new building every week and working with building users to try and reduce wasteful energy use. During each week, the team will also be hosting a Switch Off 2010 road show and a drop in session with free buffet lunch.

Switch Off 2010 is part of our efforts to reduce electricity use by 10% by the end of 2010. The University has joined the 10:10 campaign, one of the first in the region to do so.
