Carbon Management Plan
The University took part in phase three of the Carbon Trust’s Higher Education Carbon Management Programme (HECM). As part of HECM the University calculated its carbon emissions arising from:
- energy consumption in buildings,
- staff mileage and commuting,
- waste disposal to landfill,
- non-recycled office paper,
- water consumption.
Total emissions in the baseline year (2005/06) were 45,514 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).
The main output of the HECM programme is the University Carbon Management Plan (CMP). The CMP forms the cornerstone of the campus energy reduction strategy details the tasks and actions required to achieve our target of a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2012/13.
Initial priorities for action include:
- developing and implementing an energy awareness campaign;
- improved sub-metering of electricity;
- installing lighting controls to corridors, toilets and common areas.
