Kitchens and Common Rooms

Switch Off 2010Kitchens & Common Rooms

Kitchens and common rooms tend to contain lots of other electrical equipment that we might not think of at first when switching off is mentioned.

However, there are still many areas where energy can be saved, helping the University reduce its electricity base load.

Kettles

  • These use a surprising amount of energy. Please only boil the amount of water you need.

Vending and coffee machines

  • Could these be switched off at night or at weekend? Request a free automatic timer by emailing saveit@ncl.ac.uk

Only switch on lights when there is insufficient daylight.

  • Lighting is so important we’ve given it its own dedicated section!

Switch off any other electrical equipment

  • Your kitchen or common room may contain other electrical equipment that uses electricity when in ‘standby’ mode. Can these be switched off at the end of the day?
  • Defrost your fridge(s)
  • Try and do at least once a year.
