Switch Off 2010Labs

Labs are large consumers of energy. As a lab user you can reduce energy waste by making positive choices about the way you work.

 

Switch off all general equipment whenever not in use/whenever possible.

  • This may include things like incubators, centrifuges, microscopes, analytical equipment, sterilisers and ovens.

 

Fume cupboards are big energy users in labs

Practice good fume cupboard management.

  • Lower sash height whenever possible.
  • Identify which cupboards can be switched off safely when not in use.
  • Prepare equipment before switching on the fume cupboard.
  • Complete non-hazardous processes on the bench to reduce switch on time.
  • Avoid using fume cupboards as chemical stores wherever possible.

 

Please switch off lights whenever they are not required

Only switch on lights when there is insufficient daylight.

  • Lighting is so important we’ve given it its own dedicated section!

 

Get the most out of your refrigeration units.Low energy -80 freezer

  • Manage fridge and freezer contents, disposing of redundant stock to free up valuable space.
  • Keep door opening times to a minimum and ensure door seals and temperature settings are OK.
  • Consider replacing old units with new energy efficient versions.

 

Avoid the use of portable electric heaters. Please avoid the use of portable electric heaters.

  • Ensure there are no obstructions in front of heat sources or conflicting heating and cooling systems operating at the same time.
  • Keep windows and doors closed whilst the heating is on.
  • Report under/over-heating problems to ESS Customer Services on ext. 7171.
