Labs
Labs are large consumers of energy. As a lab user you can reduce energy waste by making positive choices about the way you work.
Switch off all general equipment whenever not in use/whenever possible.
- This may include things like incubators, centrifuges, microscopes, analytical equipment, sterilisers and ovens.
Practice good fume cupboard management.
- Lower sash height whenever possible.
- Identify which cupboards can be switched off safely when not in use.
- Prepare equipment before switching on the fume cupboard.
- Complete non-hazardous processes on the bench to reduce switch on time.
- Avoid using fume cupboards as chemical stores wherever possible.
Only switch on lights when there is insufficient daylight.
- Lighting is so important we’ve given it its own dedicated section!
Get the most out of your refrigeration units.
- Manage fridge and freezer contents, disposing of redundant stock to free up valuable space.
- Keep door opening times to a minimum and ensure door seals and temperature settings are OK.
- Consider replacing old units with new energy efficient versions.
Avoid the use of portable electric heaters.
