Switch Off 2010Lighting

Lighting is the most visible type of energy waste. How often have you been in town at night or at weekends and noticed University buildings lit up?

Switching off lights whenever they are not required will not just save energy and related CO2 emissions, it will also improve the image of the University in an increasingly energy aware society.

The basics:The lights are on but nobody's home! Please remember to switch off lights whenever they are not required.

  • Only switch on lights when there is insufficient daylight.
  • Switch off lights whenever leaving an area unoccupied.
  • Use task or zoned lighting where available instead of lighting the area unnecessarily.

Other things to consider:Please switch off lights

  • Agree with colleagues who will switch off lights in shared work spaces.
  • Label switches to make it easier to identify which switch relates to which light(s).
  • Report faulty lighting promptly to ESS Customer Services on ext. 7171.
  • Reduce decorative lighting wherever possible (both in design and use).
Remember! Please do not compromise health and safety standards when trying to reduce lighting levels.

Low energy lightingInvesting in more efficient lighting

The Estate Support Service is continuing to invest in energy efficient lighting and automatic motion sensors to reduce energy waste.

During 2010 around £500K will be spent on upgrading lighting in corridors, including the installation of motion sensors.
