Offices
There are lots of opportunities to reduce energy use in offices. Look around yours and identify which of the following tips you and your colleagues could take on board:
Switch off your computer and monitor
As well as at the end of the day, there are often lots of times (e.g. when you are at meetings or out to lunch) when your computer is not in use. Please switch it off whenever it is not in use.- Get into the habit of switching off your computer screen whenever you shut down your computer. Once you’ve mastered that, try switching it off whenever you are away from your desk (e.g. even when getting a drink).
Switch off all general equipment whenever not in use/whenever possible.
- This may include printers, photocopiers, scanners, cameras and work mobile phone chargers.
Talk to colleagues to identify the best way to manage switching off shared equipment. Common solutions are to agree that the last one out switches off or by fitting an automatic timer. These can be requested by emailing saveit@ncl.ac.uk. - Only print or photocopy when necessary. As well as saving paper, you will be preventing unnecessary energy use and CO2 emissions.
Only switch on lights when there is insufficient daylight.
- Lighting is so important we’ve given it its own dedicated section!
Avoid the use of portable electric heaters.
Ensure there are no obstructions in front of heat sources or conflicting heating and cooling systems operating at the same time.- Keep windows and doors closed whilst the heating is on.
- If you tend to feel the cold more than your colleagues, please compensate by wearing more layers/thicker clothing.
- Report under/over-heating problems to ESS Customer Services on ext. 7171.
- Request a room thermometer strip by emailing saveit@ncl.ac.uk
