The Green League

What is the Green League?

The Green League is part of the People and Planet's 'Go Green' campaign which aims to transform the environmental impact of the UK's schools, colleges and universities. It assesses the environmental performance of UK universities by considering their commitment to systemic environmental management and current performance.

What the Green League Measures

Management and Policy:

  • Publically available environmental policy
  • Full-time environmental staff
  • Comprehensive environmental auditing
  • Fairtrade University accreditation
  • Ethical investment policy

Performance:

  • Energy sources
  • Percentage of waste recycled
  • Carbon emissions per head
  • Water consumption per head


How does Newcastle University rate?

In 2011, Newcastle University came in 63rd (2:1) position in the Green League, a climb from 104th in 2010.

Improving Newcastle University's rating

The University gained extra points in the 2011 criteria for having reviewed the Carbon Management Plan and for work carried out on staff and student engagement campaigns.
