Responsibilities and Initiatives
The Waste Manager has responsibility for the current areas of waste management and initiatives:
- improving access to recycling and improving the variety of materials that can be recycled;
- continually monitoring and improving the campus wide waste collections service;
- continually monitoring and improving the campus wide clinical waste collection including the minimisation of clinical waste production;
- continually monitoring and improving the monthly collection of WEEE;
- confidential waste paper collection;
- advice on chemical and solvent waste collections;
- new skip procedure;
- new furniture re-use and recycling policy;
- food waste composting;
- using recycled paper.
The ethos behind effective waste management is to decide on the best environmentally friendly option for that waste. There is an understanding that the best way to tackle such issues is to use what is known as the three 'R's - reduce, re-use and recycle.
- Reduce / minimise - choosing procedures, products and service options which produce less waste.
- Re-use - the repair and reuse of items for further use within and outside the University
- Recycle / compost - the segregation of materials into single stream waste for reprocessing, ensuring resources continue to be used and diverted from landfill.
