Facts and Figures
To reduce the impact the University has on the environment we are committed to improving our performance on waste disposal. Here are some facts and figures about our performance last year and initiatives that are being introduced.
Recycling 2006 - 2007
-
Reduction in Total Waste to Landfill
Total waste to landfill in 2006/07 was 753.12 tonnes, an increase on the previous year of 28.27 tonnes.
-
Paper Recycling Down
Recycling rates for paper and cardboard for the same period saw a slight fall from 177.1 tonnes in 205/06 to 175.77 tonnes in 2006/07. Waste audits have identified that over 40% by volume of the waste going to landfill from King's Campus is paper and cardboard that can be recycled.
-
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Introduced in January 2007, the collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has resulted in almost 4500 items or over 71 tonnes going for reuse or recycling.
-
Furniture Recycling
Over 1500 items of furniture were collected during the 2007 summer vacation amnesty. Furniture that was not re-used was broken down into its constituent parts where possible and approximately 70% of the materials were sent for recycling.
-
Campus Recycling Bins
Recycling units have been introduced in foyers of all buildings for plastic bottle and food cans. External bins have been introduced for bottles, cans and paper, including newspaper.
-
Christmas Card Recycling
217.5kg of christmas cards were collected in January 2008. The cards were delivered to WH Smith who again partnered the Woodland Trust in their campaign to collect 100 million cards to raise funds to plant 24,000 trees.
Future Developments
-
Kitchen Area Recycling
Additional recycling units will be introduced in staff kitchen areas for cans, plastic bottles, domestic glass and food waste.
-
In-house Composting of Food and Vegetation
Equipment will be installed this year to enable in-house composting of food waste and prunings and cuttings. This will remove food waste from landfill and the transportation of waste vegetation off-site for composting. The equipment will produce an end product that can safely be used to enhance the grounds on campus.
-
Recycled Content Copier Paper
Reviewing the usage of copier paper and proposing changes to 80% recycled content copier paper as the standard.
-
Review of Delivery Patterns
Looking at delivery patterns of suppliers, identifying opportunities for coordinating deliveries, rationalising delivery days, timing of deliveries and the number of vehicles accessing the campus.
