Student Union Building - Refurbishment
Newcastle University's historic Students' Union completed its multi-million pound renovation in 2011 that has seen the Grade II listed building transformed.
After a twelve month refit the building has been brought up to date, with new areas for studying and relaxing as well as office and shop space. The £8 million revamp has seen the well-known red brick building modernised internally for the needs of current students, while original features, such as banisters, windows and ceiling decoration have been retained. Dating back to 1925, the original building was constructed thanks to a generous donation from Cecil Cochrane and the facade has remained unaltered since then. Built in 1924/5 by local architect Robert Burns Dick, whose company also designed the Laing Art Gallery, the Spanish City in Whitley Bay and the towers of the Tyne Bridge, the building is the social and administrative centre of Students’ Union activities.
Inside, however, the building has been transformed from top to bottom. There are new computer clusters with twenty four hour access and special study pods, so groups of students can work together without being disturbed. Social areas with specially designed seating will mean students can simply sit and chat in comfort.
A brand new advice centre has provided a hub for any students with problems that need solving, such as legal, debt, housing or study issues. And over 140 Union societies and clubs have a new base, as well as space to hold events.
