General waste

We are charged a high premium for waste that we do not recycle. Please do not put any recyclable material in the general waste.

  • No paper products
  • No plastic bottles
  • No glass
  • No food and drink cans
  • No food waste
  • No electrical equipment

What happens to our  general non recyclable waste?

The vast majority of our general waste is taken away by SITA and transported to Teesside where it is processed to produce energy. Our general waste is used to supply electricity to the grid with a minimum going to landfill - which is a massive step in the right direction!

  • The energy from the waste facility generates enough electricity to supply 40,000 homes with power - this will increase to 60,000 homes when the third line becomes operational
  • Since 2000, over 345,000 tonnes (to end July 2007) of Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) has been recycled for use as a replacement for virgin aggregates in the construction industry.
  • From 2000 to July 2007, over 27,500 tonnes of ferrous metals have been recovered and recycled together with 3,400 tonnes of non-ferrous metals.

    Ash recycling facility

Also next to the Teesside EfW plant is SITA UK's ash recycling facility. This facility receives ash from the EfW process. During the process, ferrous and non-ferrous material is recovered.
