Sculptor Hew Locke (b. Edinburgh, UK, 1959) spent his formative years (1966–80) in Guyana before returning to the UK to complete an MA in sculpture at the Royal College of Art (1994).

Locke is interested in how different cultures create their national identities through visual symbolism. He explores visual expressions of power in fields such as royal, financial and political, including interrogating public statuary. Another abiding interest is ships and their cargo, their link with globalisation, world and personal history, and their spiritual symbolism. Locke uses a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, photography, relief, fabric, sculpture and casting, and makes extensive use of found objects and collage. His permanent public artworks include 'The Jurors' of 2015, commissioned to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. Locke has exhibited in the UK internationally, including in China, Europe, the USA and India.
