Facing adversity with a smile (Fickling Lecture)

Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE, working peer, children’s campaigner, author and actor

Date/Time: Tuesday 3 October 2017, 17:30 - 18:45

Venue: Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building, Newcastle University

Free admission, all seats allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

Floella speaks about her childhood journey from sunny Trinidad to chilly Britain as a 10-year-old, which is the subject of her best-selling book, Coming to England, an account of coping in different cultures and embracing differences. Her story is both funny and thought-provoking, full of inspirational messages and uplifting anecdotes. In order to survive in her new home she had to work twice as hard and be twice as good; but survive – and thrive – she did.
