This lecture, together with the King’s Hall lunchtime concert earlier the same day, celebrates the centenary of Benjamin Britten, a composer who did more than any since Purcell to promote English opera and the setting of the English language to music. It will include live musical examples and also looks forward to the three Britten operas at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal the following week.
