In charting the fortunes of the Co-op since its formation, this lecture examines the way in which the conglomerate’s membership dynamic has sustained a democratic business model that has constantly adapted to the many challenges it has faced. The author of a new history of the Co-op provides fresh insights into both the dynamics of British co-operativism and its relationship with the rest of British business.
