The term ‘bioorthogonal chemistry’ was first coined by Professor Bertozzi in 2003 and refers to any chemical reaction that can occur inside of living systems without interfering with native biochemical processes. Bioorthogonal chemistry can be used to probe biomolecules within their native habitats – in cells, or even better, live organisms.
