Professor Tony Stevenson

Tony Stevenson is Pro Vice Chancellor for Planning and Resources and Professor of Geography.

Tony runs the University’s strategic planning and budgeting exercise (£350m) including chairing the main budgetary committees to ensure that the major budget holders’ budgets align with the University’s strategic aims and objectives. This process has allowed the University to generate surpluses of £15m pa over the last three years for investment.

Tony’s other Executive Board responsibilities include leading: development of the University’s Estate strategy; data management and the development of key performance indicators. He is the project chair for a number of new building projects: King’s Gate (£35m); Baddiley Clark (£27m); New Biomedical Research Centre (£12m); Institute of Neuroscience (£11m); Kensington/Park Terrace residential redevelopment (£19m); New Business School (£11m). He is also leading the development, under the project ‘2012’ umbrella, of the new undergraduate fee regime, including: introduction of innovative widening participation arrangements; reviewing and redefining the student offer; and proposing postgraduate fees post implementation of the new undergraduate fee regime.

Tony leads the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy including development of a Carbon Management Plan which seeks to reduce our Carbon footprint by 43% by 2020. The first fruits of this activity can be seen from the University’s 93% recycling rate; while use of car travel by staff has reduced to 22% (40% in 2006); and energy use has been held constant despite the estate expanding significantly over the last two years.

He leads and chairs the Financial Monitoring and Budget Scrutiny Group, Estate and Sustainability special interest group; Staff committee; Strategic Systems Group and is deputy chair of the Budget Setting Group and a member of Finance Committee. Tony also led the development of our relationship with INTO - a joint venturing organisation whose primary role is to enhance the University’s international undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment. Tony is currently the Executive Board lead member and Newcastle INTO LLP Board member. The INTO joint venture currently contributes about £12-£13m to the University’s bottom line.

His research interests are in recent environmental change in the European uplands including peat erosion and fluctuations in ericaceae-dominated plant communities, history of interaction between humans, climate and vegetation in the western Mediterranean, and the history of woodland management in the Mediterranean region.
