Societal Challenge Themes

CityAs part of the University's commitment to excellence with impact, we have identified institutional challenge themes that address key societal issues.

How are our challenge themes selected?

The University has outlined principles which will be used to select our societal challenge themes.

Each successive theme will be:
  • a research area in which University has an international reputation for excellence, and one which addresses significant needs in many countries worldwide, and is particularly marked in our home region
  • a subject in which the University has a tradition of engaging with the wider community, so that we have a thorough understanding of the issues beyond campus
Future themes

Over the next few years, these principles will be used to identify a third challenge theme, to be led by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Changing Age

Our first theme is Ageing, led by our world-leading Institute for Ageing and Health.

Support the University's national campaign to change the way society views older people at Changing Age.

Sustainability

Our second theme is Sustainability, drawing on our excellence in engineering, environmental science and social sciences.
