Silent Cinema

Current research at Newcastle seeks to answer two of the most pressing questions about early cinema: how did the entry of cinema into music halls, fairground and the practices of travelling showmanship at the end of the nineteenth century vary regionally?, and what processes wre involved in cinema's transformation from a novel technology into a medium in its own right in the years around 1910? The former is the purpose of current research in Tyne & Wear archives, and the latter, Dr Andrew Shail's specialism, was the subject of an international and centennial conference at Newcastle in July 2011: Cinema's Second Birth.
