courses before you start

your studies, as well as

ongoing support while

you are studying with us.

English

language entrance

requirements

If you’re not a native speaker of

English, or if you are a Tier 4 visa

application student, you will need

to show that you have adequate

knowledge of written and spoken

English before you begin your

studies.

For direct entry to a Newcastle

University course, you will typically

need an overall IELTS score of 6

.

(or equivalent), but some courses

may ask for a higher level of English

language. You can check the

individual entrance requirements

for each course online at

Tier 4 visa application students

also need to demonstrate proficiency

at level B2 of the Common

European Framework of Reference

for Languages. This is equivalent

to at least IELTS 5.5 in each of the

four components:

writing

speaking

listening

Alongside the IELTS test, the

University also accepts a range

of English language qualifications

including Cambridge, Pearson’s

and those from the International

Baccalaureate organisation.

Tests are normally considered

valid for two years from the date

the test was taken to the start date

of your course.

speaker we ask you to take a short

English language assessment

when you first arrive. This helps

us to identify what extra English

language support you may need

when you are here.

Once you have started your

course at Newcastle, there are

help you continue to build your

language skills. These include:

based in a purpose-built study centre

in the heart of the University campus

and just minutes from the city

centre. The centre includes teaching

and learning facilities for up to 1,000

international students, as well as

Students undertaking their English

language preparation courses in

London will be based at the London

campus, which delivers outstanding

learning facilities in a purpose-built

building near Liverpool Street Station.

The London campus brings together

learning attractions the capital city

has to offer.
