Goal of the Medical Sciences Spring School Healthy Ageing

The main goal of this Medical Sciences Spring School is:

  • To introduce (bio)medical students into the various aspects of healthy ageing with focus on the limitations/complications we are facing today.
  • How to understand/tackle these problems by performing scientific research.

Teaching Methods

The format of a Medical Sciences School is based on the intense interaction between students and masters.

A variety of lectures will be given by experts in the field on topics given below. The participant will work on healthy ageing-related scientific problems in small multidisciplinary groups, applying multiple (societal, medical and biological) approaches. A course book will be composed.

Who can participate?

Selected (bio)medical students interested in healthy ageing/healthy ageing research from preferred partners of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen.

Newcastle will nominate two current MRes or PhD students, or recent MRes graduates (e.g. intercalating MBBS students who have returned to clinical studies).

The Prize

  • Free registration (including accommodation and meals (it is a student event organised by students, so housing will be in student-housing facilities)) on the Spring School Health Ageing (kindly provided by the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen)
  • A travel grant of up to £200 provided by the Faculty of Medical Sciences Graduate School, Newcastle University.  Groningen is pleasant University city in the north-east of The Netherlands, reached by a 2 hour train journey from Amsterdam (with convenient flights and ferry connections from Newcastle).

The Competition

To enter the competition you need to complete a paragraph of why you would benefit from attending the Groningen Medical Sciences Spring School Healthy Ageing.  Selection will be by a small committee from the Graduate School.

Closing Date: 10th February 2012
