Seminars and Training

Design Unit offers a comprehensive range of training services to support both gear manufacturers and gear users.

Although gears have been in existence for many hundreds of years they are often poorly taught on engineering courses. There is lack of general understanding of the key skills necessary to ensure you get good quality gears from the concept stage through design, analysis, manufactue, inspection and final installation and test.

Design Unit offers a range of training options, either at customers premises or at Newcastle University. One day seminars, often in collaboration with the British Gear Association (BGA), prove successful, but you may want a longer more detailed course or bespoke training to suit your specific needs.

Training sessions tend to work most successfully in smaller groups, presented in a relaxed and informal manner. Subjects covered include:

  • How gears work and gear terminology
  • Good gear design practice balancing power density improvements and minimising risk
  • Gear specification
  • Gear stress analysis, with ISO6336, scuffing risk
  • Minimising noise
  • Gear measurement and calibration
  • Interpretation of measurement results
  • Material testing
  • Material analysis methods
  • Failure modes and failure recognition
  • Gear testing
