To enhance Newcastle’s global reputation and ensure we can continue in our mission to deliver benefits for life-long health, the Faculty of Medical Sciences seeks support for major initiatives that will continue to maintain momentum towards advances in major disease areas. Newcastle has strong, world leading teams working on age related, neurological and chronic diseases as well as renowned Institutes working on cancer and stem cell regenerative medicine and has built up significant research expertise in public health and infectious diseases.
With excellent facilities and a strong basic science research base, Newcastle is well placed to translate findings into real clinical applications that benefit patients both locally and across the world. We are committed and excited by how our work will enhance the health for millions of people in the future.
To achieve our vision, we must continue to attract the best academic leaders by funding their posts and ensuring talented researchers have the opportunity to thrive in our vibrant research teams. Maintaining and enhancing research infrastructure is also essential to furthering our understanding of different diseases and health issues and by investing in equipment, laboratories and new buildings, we can continue to build the critical mass in the areas where Newcastle leads the way.
Understanding health through medical research has been a key endeavour throughout history and we are building on our world renowned biomedical research strengths to revolutionise the treatment of disease and health care. To do this, we must continue to nurture the expertise within our research teams and support career pathways for students studying our undergraduate medical and postgraduate research programmes. In recognition of the year that our Medical School was founded, the 1834 Fund has enabled the Medical School to offer much needed funding to students looking to gain the first step in research career. These bright students and they ideas which they develop hold the key to future medical breakthroughs.
The Fund enables donors to give regular monthly gifts in support of prestigious scholarships. Naming opportunities also exist for individuals, charitable trusts and MB BS reunion year groups.
