Winning the next general election

Progress has organized a series of events across the country on the theme of the newly emerging centre-ground in British politics and how the Labour Party might best win over these voters. This series was launched in early February to a full Sunderland Civic Centre chaired by Julie Elliott MP and attended by local MPs, elected councillors, and political advisors. Speakers included Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Phil Wilson MP, and Dr Thom Brooks (Politics, Newcastle).

Speakers at future events include Lord Adonis, Rt Hon Douglas Alexander MP, Rt Hon David Blunkett MP, Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP, Rt Hon Peter Hain MP, Rt Hon Sadiq Khan MP, Rachel Reeves MP, Chuka Umunna MP, and former Home Secretary Rt Hon Jacqui Smith. Brooks argued that the defining issue for the 2015 general election is insecurity and that a politics of hope with aspiration will triumph over a politics that played to cynicism and public fears. Progress has a prestigious speakers list of leading figures in the Labour Party movement that includes several members of the Shadow Cabinet. Brooks was invited to join this list in February.
