Geography Community

Field trip in Krakow

Geography at Newcastle is not just about teaching and research. We are also keen to build a strong and inclusive sense of the geography community here at Newcastle:

  • Our student-led Geog-Soc is one of the largest and most active societies at the University. Geog-Soc’s activities range from regular social gatherings, including the annual Geography Ball, to Geography used-book sales.
  • Students in a cafe on campus We have a dedicated 'Geography Community' slot timetabled in the schedules of staff and students to help facilitate activities such as debates, workshops, Dissertation Conference etc.
  • Our student mentoring system provides a great opportunity for new students to help settle into university life. The mentoring programme begins during induction of stage 1, with every incoming student being assigned a student mentor from our existing stage 2 and 3 student body.
  • Aside from your regular meetings with Tutors and course leaders, we also operate a Staff-Student Consultative Committee. Our SSCC meets monthly and is a great opportunity for students and staff to feedback and discuss ideas and experiences about the programme.
  • Our tutorial system provides comprehensive pastoral and academic support throughout the degree programme. Alongside their academic role, we also recognise that fieldtrips play a key role in the student experience. Our fieldwork opportunities begin early in Stage 1 with a residential fieldtrip to the Lake District to help everyone to get to know their fellow students and staff even better. Whilst in Stage 2 and 3 options include including New York, Krakow, Amsterdam, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland and New Zealand.
  • Represent Geography in intramural competitions as part of our football and netball teams
  • Our Geography Community does not stop at the time of graduation. Once a Newcastle Geographer, always a Newcastle Geographer. See our alumni pages for details of our former graduates.
