Every year, a number of our graduates choose to enter careers in politics-related fields across the UK, Europe, and the world. Last year our students went on to destinations including the Houses of Parliament, the BBC, Amnesty International and Northumberland County Council.
The skills you will develop on a politics degree prepare you for any graduate employment: outside politics, the destinations of last year’s graduates include Apple, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, HSBC, and Aviva.
In the Politics department, we take the employability of our students very seriously. The learning experience we give our graduates is specifically designed to equip you with the skills to succeed. These include:
the ability to quickly understand and assess a new problem or issue
working effectively both as an individual and part of a team
effective oral and written communication skills
time and project management
research skills, including qualitative and quantitative research methods
Politics offers a range of internships and work-experience opportunities to students. We run an innovative and popular module for our final year students modelled around a work placement that counts towards your degree
Our research networks connect you and your learning to the world outside of university. Our close links to governmental and intergovernmental bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector ensure the relevance of your academic work and help you to build crucial connections.
Politics works alongside our award-winning careers service to ensure that our programmes provide a foundation for your career development. In 2010, Newcastle University’s Careers Service was ranked 8th best in the world by the International Student Barometer. Newcastle University has an impressive track record of graduate employment. We rank 12th in the UK in terms of 'numbers in graduate level jobs' (Sunday Times University Guide 2011).
Our latest University initiative, ncl+, gives every student the opportunity to tailor their range of skills and experience to their career goals.
